    Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

    The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is one of the most popular pathways for skilled individuals to immigrate to Canada. Managed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), this program falls under the Express Entry system. If you qualify, you could receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada. The Federal Skilled Worker Program uses a points-based system to assess if you have the skills and experience needed to settle and succeed in Canada. Your points are based on several factors like work experience, education, language ability, and more. Higher points improve your chances of getting selected from the Express Entry pool.

    What Are the Requirements for FSWP?

    To apply for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you need to meet three basic requirements:

    1. Skilled Work Experience: You must have at least one year of full-time paid work experience in the last 10 years.
    2. Language Ability: You need to show proficiency in English or French through a recognized language test like IELTS.
    3. Education: You must have completed at least a secondary education equivalent to Canadian standards.
    These are the minimum requirements. Once you meet them, your application will be further assessed based on other criteria.

    • Job Offer: Having a valid job offer from a Canadian employer gives you extra points.
    • Language Proficiency: Strong skills in English or French can boost your score.
    • Adaptability: Factors like your spouse’s skills or your previous experience in Canada can also earn you points.

    To be eligible for the program, you must score at least 67 points out of 100 on the FSWP points grid.

    What Jobs Are Eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker Program?

    The FSWP is open to candidates with the right work experience in one of the 347 eligible occupations under Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. The NOC organizes jobs into five categories based on skill level and type:

    • NOC 0: Managerial jobs
    • NOC A: Professional jobs (requiring a degree)
    • NOC B: Skilled trades and technical jobs
    • NOC C: Intermediate jobs (requiring high school and/or job-specific training)
    • NOC D: Labor jobs (requiring on-the-job training)
    To qualify for FSWP, your job must be classified under NOC 0, A, or B. You will need at least one year of continuous full-time work experience in one of these categories.

    The Federal Skilled Worker Program uses a 67-point grid to determine if you are eligible. Points are awarded based on six main factors:

    1. Education (Maximum 25 points): Higher education levels get more points.
    2. Language (Maximum 28 points): Stronger English or French skills mean more points.
    3. Work Experience (Maximum 15 points): More years of skilled work experience result in higher points.
    4. Age (Maximum 12 points): Younger applicants (ages 18-35) earn the most points.
    5. Arranged Employment (Maximum 10 points): A valid job offer from a Canadian employer earns points.
    6. Adaptability (Maximum 10 points): Points are awarded if you or your spouse have past Canadian experience or family in Canada.
    To pass, you need at least 67 points out of 100.

    Points Breakdown

    Here’s how points are allocated for each factor: 

    Education (Maximum 25 points) 

     
    • Doctoral Degree: 25 points
    • Master’s Degree: 23 points
    • Bachelor’s Degree (3 years or more): 21 points
    • Two-Year Post-Secondary Credential: 19 points
    • One-Year Post-Secondary Credential: 15 points
    • High School (Secondary): 5 points
     

    Language (Maximum 28 points)

    Points depend on your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scores for each skill (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). The maximum is 24 points for the first official language and an additional 4 points for a second official language.

     

    Work Experience (Maximum 15 points)

    • 1 year: 9 points
    • 2 years: 11 points
    • 3 years: 13 points
    • 6 years or more: 15 points
     

    Age (Maximum 12 points)

    • 18-35 years: 12 points
    • 36 years: 11 points
    • Each year above 36: 1 point less, with no points awarded for applicants 47 or older.

    Arranged Employment (Maximum 10 points)

    • Job offer from a Canadian employer: 10 points
     

    Adaptability (Maximum 10 points)

    Adaptability factors include:
    • Previous work experience in Canada: 10 points
    • Spouse’s language proficiency: 5 points
    • Family in Canada: 5 points
     

    Financial Requirements for FSWP

    To apply for FSWP, you must show proof of funds to support yourself and your family when you move to Canada. The amount required depends on the size of your family. For example:
    • 1 person: CAD 14,690
    • 2 people: CAD 18,288
    • 3 people: CAD 22,483

    How to Apply for a Canada PR Visa through FSWP

    To begin the process, you must create an Express Entry profile and submit your details to IRCC. This doesn’t guarantee PR status but it does get you into the Express Entry pool. Once in the pool, your profile is given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

    Candidates with the highest CRS scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Permanent Residency. You’ll have 60 days to submit all required documents for your PR application.

     

    Documents Needed for FSWP

    When applying through FSWP, you need the following documents:

    1. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): This report proves your foreign education is equal to Canadian standards. You can get an ECA from organizations like World Education Services (WES).
    2. Language Test Results: You need to submit scores from an approved language test (IELTS or CELPIP for English, TEF for French).
    3. Identification: Passports for you and your family members.

    Once you receive your ITA, you’ll need to submit additional documents within 60 days to complete your application for PR.
